Class Summary for 10-19-2005 In class today we discussed and compared Beauty and Tragedy. We looked at many different aspects of beauty and contrasted Egyptian with Greek. Egyptian beauty is known for straight lines and still figures. Egyptian art is very symetrical with little or no movement. They are like everlasting, frozen pieces of art. This is in complete contrast to Greek art. It is known for action and pieces that look like they are in movement. They are more realistic and dynamic. In Greek art the man's body is used without shame. This is because it was a patriarchal society. These men are posed in various positions and seen as strong prevalent men. Prof Lee provided numerous pictures for us to look and and compare from men and women throughout the years. From as earlier as the first Egyptians, to as late as two or three years ago. These pictures showed us how the early Greek and Egyptian art is still prevalent in today's time. We also briefly discussed tragedy and Odepidus, but more will be discussed in the lecture on Thursday.
