Our class began with a discussion about Plato and Aristotle. We learned the differences between the two: Aristotle was interested in categorizing, wrote in the form of statements, was more scientific and defined matters. Plato, meaning broad shoulder, was very different from Aristotle in the view that he was interested in dialogue, he was poetic, philosophical, and began the first academia, a place to study. After the discussion of the two philosophers, we moved on to a discussion of Aristotle's Book I, Politics. The main focus of our discussion was of the meaning of nature? The two quotes we examined in class were "Man is by nature a political animal" and "The man is more of a political animal than bees or any other gregarious animal". Gregarious, in the context, refers to coming together like a heard of animals. This quote led to a discussion of 1) the symbolic relationship, and 2) the ability to organize into groups. We discussed Aristotle's view that man is born political; politics is of man's nature as much as family is of man's nature.
